Complementary Information:The Vía Verde de la Sierra crosses the mountains in the north of the province of Cadix and the south of the province of Seville. Measuring 36.5 km, it crosses the municipalities of Olvera, Puerto Serrano, Coripe, Montellano, El Coronil and Pruna. Situated in landscapes of unparalleled natural beauty, the greenway was inaugurated in 2000. Today it comprises 30 tunnels, four viaducts, three former train stations (Olvera, Puerto Serrano and Coripe) converted into hotels with restaurants and the Zaframagón train station, which has been turned into a visitors' centre and bird-watching post. One of the major attractions of the Vía Verde de la Sierra is the “Chaparro de la Vega”, which has been declared a natural monument of Andalusia. The "Chaparro" is a hundred-year-old holm oak with a diameter of more than 28 metres at its peak. The greenway also crosses “El Peñón de Zaframagón”, a nature reserve situated at an altitude of 584 m, home to the largest colony of griffon vultures in Andalusia and one of the biggest in Europe. The Vía Verde de la Sierra has been managed since its creation by the Fundación Vía Verde de la Sierra, a body comprising the provincial authorities of Cadix and Seville and the local authorities of Olvera, Puerto Serrano, Coripe, Montellano, El Coronil and Pruna. The Foundation is also in charge of maintenance of the greenway and its security, as well as promotion, development and the organisation of recreational activities. One of the main responsibilities of the Fundación Vía Verde de la Sierra is to keep both the local population and users informed about the importance of proper care of the greenway and respect for its rules, especially with regard to motor vehicles. The greenway is also meant to contribute to the revitalisation of a rural region with high unemployment (37.5%) through an active tourism promotion programme and awareness-raising actions conducted by the foundation in liaison with the towns and provinces concerned.
